Les Sims 4 is a life simulation video game from The Sims series, developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. It was released for Microsoft Windows on September 4, 2014, in Europe. The game’s soundtrack was composed by Ilan Eshkeri.

It was later released for macOS in February 2015, and for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in November 2017. On consoles, The Sims 4 does not feature an open world—players must wait through loading screens when moving between areas, similar to the PC version and earlier titles like The Sims and The Sims 2. In October 2022, the base game became free-to-play.

The gameplay in The Sims 4 is similar to that of previous games in the series. Players create one or more characters, known as “Sims,” and guide them through life from birth to death. They can customize their Sims’ appearance, choose their home, career, aspirations, relationships, and more. The game does not have specific goals—its main purpose is to simulate and manage the lives of the Sims. In-game violence is minimal and depends on the choices made by the player.

The Sims 4 is a social simulation game that continues the legacy of open-ended creativity established by previous entries in The Sims series. Rather than having a fixed storyline or specific goals, the game focuses on player-driven experiences, allowing players to design, control, and shape the lives of their virtual characters, known as Sims. Players are free to explore, experiment, and create their own narratives, whether they wish to build dream homes, pursue careers, or simulate complex social relationships.

Each Sim has unique aspirations, traits, and emotions that influence their behavior and interactions. The game introduces “wants and fears”, dynamic short-term goals that reflect a Sim’s current situation and emotional state, providing structure for players who prefer goal-oriented play. Managing a Sim’s life revolves around fulfilling six key needs—hunger, bladder, hygiene, social, fun, and energy—which gradually deplete throughout the day. Players must maintain these needs by performing everyday activities such as cooking, sleeping, showering, or socializing.

The in-game currency, Simoleons (§), is used to purchase homes, furniture, and other goods. Sims earn money primarily through careers, each requiring the development of specific skills to achieve promotions and higher pay. For example, a Sim pursuing a career in the Culinary field must refine their Cooking and Mixology skills. Players can also use cheat codes to gain unlimited money or unlock hidden gameplay features, giving them greater creative freedom.

The Sims 4 also supports a wide range of downloadable content (DLC) packs, which expand the base game with new worlds, gameplay mechanics, clothing, and build items. Beyond official DLC, the PC versions on Windows and macOS offer extensive modding support, allowing players to install custom content—fan-made creations such as hairstyles, makeup, furniture, and clothing—that personalize and enhance gameplay.

Through its combination of creativity, simulation, and freedom of choice, The Sims 4 provides an endlessly customizable experience that lets players express themselves and tell unique life stories.
