WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME ?
Dark Souls III is a third-person action role-playing game set in a dark fantasy universe. It was developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The third installment in the Dark Souls series, the game was released in March 2016 in Japan and in April 2016 in North America and Europe for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Two DLC expansions, Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City, were later released to complete the game’s story. A definitive edition titled Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades, which includes the base game and both DLCs, was released in April 2017.
The game builds on the foundations of previous entries in the Souls series, refining and enhancing its core elements. The gameplay focuses heavily on exploration and combat, particularly against powerful bosses. Players can customize their character's appearance, class, and physical attributes, as well as their equipment, choosing from a wide array of weapons, armor, and items—each with unique traits. These include one-handed and two-handed swords, daggers, bows, firebombs, shields, and more.
Defeating enemies grants the player "souls," which serve as both currency and experience points. Souls can be used to purchase equipment or level up various stats such as health, stamina, strength, dexterity, intelligence, and faith.
Bonfires act as checkpoints and save points throughout the game world. However, resting at a bonfire revives all regular enemies in the area, though bosses and certain special enemies remain defeated.
Death plays a central role in both gameplay and story. When a player dies, they drop all collected souls at the spot of their death. If they die again before retrieving them, those souls are lost permanently. Due to its high difficulty, Dark Souls III is often described as a "die and retry" experience—each failure is a lesson, pushing the player to adapt and improve continuously.
In the kingdom of Lothric, a solemn bell tolls to mark the waning of the First Flame, the source of light and life that sustains the Age of Fire. As the flame fades, the world begins to succumb to the Age of Dark, bringing forth the Undead—cursed beings doomed to rise again after death. To delay this inevitable end, great heroes and lords of past ages have rekindled the First Flame through the Linking of the Fire, sacrificing their souls to extend the light’s life. However, in this era, Prince Lothric, chosen to perform the ritual, refuses his duty, preferring to watch the flame die rather than perpetuate the cycle. In response, the bell’s toll summons the Lords of Cinder—those who once linked the fire—to rise once more. Yet, most of them turn away from their calling, abandoning the world to darkness. Meanwhile, Pontiff Sulyvahn, a corrupt sorcerer from the Painted World of Ariandel, seizes control over Irithyll of the Boreal Valley and Anor Londo, ruling with tyranny and deceit.
The player assumes the role of the Ashen One, an Unkindled—an Undead who failed to become a Lord of Cinder but is now resurrected to succeed where others have faltered. The Ashen One’s mission is to return the rebellious Lords to their thrones in Firelink Shrine. These include the Abyss Watchers, a legion bound by the Old Wolf’s Blood who turned upon one another in eternal conflict; Yhorm the Giant, who once sacrificed himself to protect his conquered people; and Aldrich, a devourer of men and gods who rose to power through sheer gluttony and strength. Finally, the Ashen One must confront Prince Lothric, who, despite being destined to link the flame, rejected his fate.
With all the Lords defeated and their remains restored to their thrones, the Ashen One journeys to the Kiln of the First Flame, the cradle of all fire. There, they face the Soul of Cinder, a being formed from the remnants of every soul that has ever linked the flame—a living embodiment of the world’s endless cycle. Upon its defeat, the Ashen One is given the final choice: to rekindle the flame and continue the Age of Fire, or to let it fade and usher in the long-awaited Age of Dark.
