And if you prefer to stay within Rockstar’s universe, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the studio’s most recent masterpiece, offering an unforgettable Western experience.

Grand Theft Auto V: An Expansive and Realistic Open World

Grand Theft Auto V takes place in Los Santos, a fictional city largely inspired by Los Angeles, and the surrounding Blaine County. Los Santos had already appeared in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but at a much smaller scale due to the technical limitations of that time. Now, the city and its surroundings are recreated with an incredible level of detail. Some of the neighborhoods revealed in the first trailer include Greater Los Santos, Los Puerta, The Greater Naranja Area, and Vinewood.

The game world is much larger than in previous installments — even bigger than Red Dead Redemption, also developed by Rockstar Games. The studio described GTA V as its largest and most ambitious game ever. According to Game Informer, the map of Los Santos surpasses the combined size of GTA: San Andreas, GTA IV, and Red Dead Redemption.

The first trailer revealed several well-known landmarks from Los Angeles and Santa Monica, recreated under fictional names. For instance, Santa Monica becomes Del Perro, Pershing Square becomes Legion Square, and U.S. Bank Tower turns into Maze Bank Tower. Other recognizable sites include Bradbury Building, California Plaza, Union Depository, Los Santos City Hall, Observatory Griffith, and bridges like the Vespucci Boulevard Bridge and Vincent-Thomas Bridge. Entire areas such as Venice Beach, Sunset Boulevard, Mount Lee, and Beverly Hills have been faithfully adapted, with Hollywood humorously transformed into Vinewood.

Beyond the urban area, GTA V offers a vast natural environment inspired by Southern California. North of Los Santos lies the Alamo Sea, a salty and polluted lake modeled after Salton Sea, east of Los Angeles. The game also features landscapes reminiscent of Palm Springs, including the San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm, recreated with great realism.

At launch, GTA V included 285 vehicles — the most in any title of the franchise. By comparison, San Andreas had 192 and GTA IV only 130. As in previous entries, the game uses fictional car brands parodying real ones: Pegassi for Lamborghini, Obey for Audi, Grotti for Ferrari, and Maibatsu for Mitsubishi. Players can drive an impressive variety of vehicles — cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes, boats, buses, trucks (with trailers), helicopters, trains (non-drivable), submarines, and even a blimp (available as a pre-order bonus).

Public transportation, such as taxis and the metro, is also available, adding to the immersion and realism of the vast and vibrant world of Grand Theft Auto V.
