Dead Cells is a roguelike-Metroidvania game released in 2018 by the French indie studio Motion Twin. In the game, players control a shape-shifting creature known as the Prisoner. Their goal is to escape a plague-ridden island and ultimately defeat its King. As they explore the island’s procedurally generated levels, players collect weapons, treasures, and various tools. The game includes a permadeath mechanic, meaning that dying causes the player to lose all items and abilities gathered during that run. However, a resource called "Cells," dropped by defeated enemies, can be used to unlock permanent upgrades between runs.

Dead Cells is a 2D side-scrolling action game that blends elements of roguelike and Metroidvania genres, often referred to as a "roguevania." Players take on the role of the Prisoner, a shapeless being navigating an island infested with mutated creatures. Each time the player dies, they lose all weapons and upgrades earned during that run, except for certain permanent items that carry over.

The game offers a variety of weapons, including swords, bows, shields, and deployable traps that damage enemies nearby. In combat, the Prisoner can dodge on the ground to evade enemy attacks or jump over them. Dodging through an enemy allows the player to pass through and strike from behind. Additionally, when falling from a height, the Prisoner can slam into the ground to stun enemies below or avoid being stunned from the fall themselves.

Dead Cells is a 2D side-scrolling “roguevania”, a blend of roguelike and Metroidvania gameplay styles. The player takes control of the Prisoner, an amorphous, undead creature who explores a mysterious island infested with mutated monsters. Upon death, the Prisoner loses all weapons, upgrades, and collected resources from that run—except for a few permanent unlocks that carry over between playthroughs.

Combat in Dead Cells is fast-paced and tactical, relying on melee and ranged weapons such as swords, bows, shields, and deployable traps. Players can dodge enemy attacks, roll through opponents to strike from behind, and perform ground slams that stun enemies and negate fall damage. The system demands precision and timing, drawing comparisons to the Dark Souls series for its challenging enemies, punishable mistakes, and reliance on learning enemy behaviors through repetition and death.

Throughout each procedurally generated level, players collect a resource known as Cells, obtained from defeated enemies. These Cells can be used to purchase permanent upgrades—including new weapons, healing potions, or enhanced abilities—but only at the end of each dungeon section. If the player dies before reaching a safe zone, all unspent Cells are permanently lost. Players can also discover blueprints for new equipment, but these must be successfully carried out of a dungeon to be unlocked.

Between dungeons, players can select a limited number of mutations, which provide temporary buffs—such as improved health regeneration, faster cooldowns, or increased critical hit chances—lasting until death. Weapons can also be reforged, granting new or improved effects in combat.

Each level combines handcrafted and random elements, ensuring that every run feels fresh with new layouts, enemy placements, and item locations. Hidden throughout the world are Power Scrolls, which increase the Prisoner’s stats—Brutality, Tactics, or Survival—to enhance specific weapon types. Players can also find Runes, rare permanent upgrades dropped by powerful Elite enemies, which unlock new traversal abilities and access to previously unreachable areas, adding a strong sense of progression within the game’s looping, ever-changing world.
