Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a 2019 action-adventure game developed by FromSoftware. It was released in Japan by FromSoftware and internationally by Activision for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in March 2019, and later for Stadia in October 2020.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective. Compared to FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, it includes fewer role-playing elements, no character creation, no stat leveling, and no online multiplayer. However, it offers gear upgrades, a skill tree, special abilities tied to a prosthetic arm, and limited customization options.

Combat focuses on breaking an enemy’s posture and balance rather than simply reducing health points. Players use a katana to deflect and counter attacks, creating openings for a decisive killing blow.

The game also incorporates stealth mechanics, allowing players to eliminate enemies silently when undetected. The protagonist can use tools such as a grappling hook to navigate and gain tactical advantages. A unique feature is the resurrection system, enabling the player to revive immediately upon death if they possess sufficient resurrection power, which can be replenished by defeating enemies.

During the late Sengoku period, the Ashina clan, led by Kensei Isshin Ashina, seizes a land blessed by a foreign deity known as the Divine Dragon, whose bloodline grants immortality through the Dragon’s Heritage and the Rejuvenating Waters. Amid this turmoil, a nameless orphan is adopted by the wandering shinobi Owl, who names him Wolf and trains him in the art of stealth and combat. Wolf eventually becomes the protector of Kuro, the young heir to the Dragon’s Heritage.

Two decades later, with Isshin dying and the Ashina clan besieged by the Interior Ministry, Isshin’s grandson Genichiro seeks Kuro’s blood to create an immortal army. After warning from Isshin’s physician Emma, Wolf attempts to flee with Kuro but is defeated by Genichiro, losing his left arm and his lord. Rescued by the Sculptor, Wolf receives a prosthetic arm and takes the name Sekiro—“the one-armed wolf.” Revisiting his past, Sekiro recalls a raid on Kuro’s home years earlier, where Owl’s betrayal led to his near-death and Kuro’s blood saving his life.

Sekiro defeats Genichiro in battle, but the latter escapes using the corrupted Rejuvenating Sediment. Kuro then asks Sekiro to perform the Immortal Severance ritual, a ceremony that will end the Dragon’s Heritage at the cost of his life. In gathering the required relics, Sekiro confronts Owl, revealed to have faked his death to obtain the Dragon’s power. Choosing loyalty to Kuro, Sekiro kills Owl and ventures to the Divine Realm, defeating the Divine Dragon to complete the ritual.

Upon returning, Sekiro battles Genichiro and Isshin, revived in his prime. Depending on the player’s choices, three endings unfold: Immortal Severance, where Sekiro kills Kuro and lives on as a sculptor; Purification, where Sekiro sacrifices himself to save Kuro; and Return, where Sekiro joins the Divine Child to restore the Dragon’s Heritage to its homeland in the West.
