Hogwarts Legacy is a 2023 action role-playing game developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games under the Portkey Games label. Set within the Wizarding World franchise, the game takes place a century before the events of the Harry Potter novels. Players assume the role of a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, attending classes, learning spells, and exploring an open-world version of the castle and its surroundings. With the help of fellow students and professors, the protagonist embarks on a quest to uncover an ancient secret hidden within the magical world.

After Warner Bros. acquired Avalanche Software in 2017, Hogwarts Legacy became the studio’s first project not connected to Disney Interactive Studios since 2005. Development began around 2018, with an estimated production budget of $150 million. The storyline was set in a time period free of established Wizarding World characters, allowing players to experience a unique and self-contained narrative. Avalanche Software focused on ensuring the game captured the feel of the Harry Potter novels while also expanding beyond familiar locations to create a richer, more immersive world.

Hogwarts Legacy was praised for its combat mechanics, world design, characters, variety of content, and faithful representation of the Wizarding World, though it faced criticism for technical issues and a perceived lack of innovation in its open-world design. Within its first two weeks, the game sold over 12 million copies, generating $850 million in global revenue. It went on to become one of the best-selling video games of all time, selling 34 million copies and earning $1 billion in total revenue. The game appeared on numerous year-end lists and received recognition through nominations at the BAFTA Games Awards, D.I.C.E. Awards, and even the Grammy Awards.

The story begins when the protagonist receives a letter from Professor Matilda Weasley, confirming their late acceptance into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as a fifth-year student. Assigned to Professor Eleazar Fig as their mentor, the student travels with him from London to Hogwarts via a flying coach. During the journey, a dragon attack forces them to activate a Portkey, transporting them to the Scottish Highlands. There, they discover ancient ruins leading to a hidden Gringotts vault, where the protagonist realizes they can perceive traces of ancient magic. Inside, they encounter the goblin Ranrok, leader of a rebellion against wizards, before narrowly escaping to Hogwarts.

At school, the protagonist is sorted into one of the four houses, begins classes, and learns new spells. During a trip to Hogsmeade, they and a companion fend off a troll sent by Ranrok. Later, sneaking into the library, they recover missing pages from a mysterious book, leading them and Professor Fig to uncover the Map Chamber, a secret area beneath Hogwarts. There, they meet portraits of four former professors known as the Keepers, guardians of ancient magic.

To uncover the truth about this power, the protagonist undertakes four challenging trials, each ending in a Pensieve memory. These reveal the story of Isidora Morganach, a former professor who abused ancient magic to absorb others’ pain, forcing the Keepers to kill her. Meanwhile, Ranrok, aided by dark wizard Victor Rookwood, seeks Isidora’s hidden repository of magic to enhance his strength.

After crafting a special wand with Ollivander’s help, the protagonist rejects Rookwood’s alliance and defeats him. They and Fig reach the repository, choosing either to seal the ancient magic or absorb it. Ranrok arrives, takes the power, and transforms into a dragon. After a fierce battle, the protagonist defeats him, though Fig dies from his injuries.

The year concludes with the student honoring Fig’s memory, completing their studies, and—after earning 100 House Points from Professor Weasley—winning the House Cup for their house.
