Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a 2020 action role-playing game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. As the twelfth major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series and the successor to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018), it is set primarily between 872 and 878 AD during the Viking expansion into the British Isles.

Players take on the role of Eivor Varinsdottir, a fierce Viking raider seeking to establish a new settlement in England while becoming entangled in the ancient conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood, who fight for freedom, and the Templar Order, who seek peace through control. The game also features a modern-day storyline following Layla Hassan, an Assassin reliving Eivor’s genetic memories to uncover a way to prevent Earth’s impending destruction.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was released on November 10, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Stadia, followed by the PlayStation 5 version on November 12, 2020. The game received generally positive reviews, earning praise for its storyline, characters, voice acting, visuals, soundtrack, world design, and the interconnectivity of its activities. However, critics pointed out its excessive length, technical issues, and repetitive gameplay structure. Despite the criticisms, Valhalla achieved record-breaking success, marking the biggest launch in the Assassin’s Creed franchise and becoming Ubisoft’s second most profitable title of all time.

Ubisoft provided extensive post-launch support for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla over a period of two years, delivering a wide range of free and paid content, including story expansions, new game modes, and seasonal events. The game’s success was followed by the release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage (2023), set in Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age. Mirage focuses on Basim Ibn Ishaq, a key supporting character from Valhalla, exploring his origins and transformation into a Master Assassin.

Players can choose to play as either a male or female character and fully customize their appearance, including hairstyles, war paint, clothing, and armor. According to creative consultant Thierry Noël, although there is still historical debate about the role of women warriors among the Vikings, Ubisoft decided to include them prominently because women held significant places in Norse mythology and Viking society. The combat mechanics have been redesigned to allow the dual wielding of weapons, while the hero’s companion animal is now a raven instead of an eagle, used to scout and mark enemies.

Unlike previous installments, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla focuses less on traditional leveling systems and more on skill selection through expansive skill trees, similar to those in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Fallout 4, and Skyrim. Enemies scale based on the player’s collection of abilities, and special abilities can be discovered by exploring the game world. Player choices, whether in dialogue or gameplay, have direct consequences on the relationships and political alliances with other non-playable characters.

A central feature of the game is the settlement, which the protagonist Eivor helps build and manage throughout their journey. As creative director Ashraf Ismail explained, “much of what you do in the game will feed into the settlement, allowing it to grow and prosper.” Players can construct various buildings that offer gameplay benefits, though doing so requires raids to gather essential resources. Naval gameplay returns in a more limited form, with longships serving mainly for quick travel and retreat after battles rather than large-scale naval combat.

Although Valhalla is primarily a single-player experience, it includes online components designed to encourage creativity and community sharing. Players can create and recruit Jomsvikings, custom non-playable crew members, and share them with other players around the world.
