Return of the Obra Dinn (literally “The Return of the Obra Dinn”), subtitled An Insurance Adventure with Minimal Color, is a mystery adventure and puzzle video game created by independent developer Lucas Pope and published by 3909 LLC. It was released on October 18, 2018, for Windows and Mac. Console ports for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch followed a year later, launching on October 18, 2019.

The objective of Return of the Obra Dinn is to determine the identity and cause of death for each of the ship's missing or deceased crew members and passengers. The player must choose from a wide range of possible fates, such as "crushed by a falling cannon" or "thrown overboard."

The player explores the Obra Dinn in a fully navigable 3D environment, similar to exploration-based games like Gone Home or Firewatch, though objects in the environment cannot be moved or altered. Every deck of the East Indiaman Obra Dinn is accessible, including the poop deck, upper deck, gun deck, lower deck, and cargo hold. The player can interact only with certain elements, such as door handles to cabins and workshops, and the ladder leading back to the rowboat that brought them to the ship.

The player takes the role of an insurance investigator working for the British East India Company in 1807, tasked with uncovering the fate of a ship that vanished years earlier and has mysteriously reappeared adrift: the Obra Dinn. The vessel had departed from London in 1802 with a crew of sixty, bound for the Cape of Good Hope, before being declared lost with all hands in 1803. The investigator—whose gender is randomly determined at the start of the game—must determine how each crew member met their end, in order to decide what compensation or pensions should be granted to their families.

Equipped with a pocket watch and a ship’s manifest sent by a mysterious “H. E.,” the investigator begins their work. The document contains a list of all crew members and passengers, a map of the ship’s route through Madeira, the Canary Islands, and the Azores, deck plans, and a sketch of life on board drawn by one of the passengers. H. E. instructs the investigator to return the completed record to the Office of Foreign Affairs in Morocco once the case is solved.

The investigator is rowed to the ghost ship, which, though still afloat, is in a state of ruin and completely deserted. As they search through the decks and cabins, a storm begins to rise. The sailor who brought them warns that the worsening weather may prevent their return, urging them to finish quickly. The investigator completes the examination and officially closes the case.

After a week of work, they submit a 23-page report to the East India Company, detailing the tragic events aboard the Obra Dinn. With the ship eventually sunk by the storm off Falmouth, and both Crown and Company cargo lost, the investigator recommends heavy compensation—£29,285 in total. Depending on each sailor’s conduct—heroic, criminal, or mutinous—their heirs receive rewards, pensions, or fines, and in some cases lose their inheritance to the Crown.

A year later, the investigator receives a letter announcing the death of H. E., the ship’s original commissioner, expressing his final thoughts—either satisfaction or disappointment—regarding the investigator’s handling of the Obra Dinn tragedy.
