Payday 3 is a first-person shooter developed by Overkill Software and Starbreeze AB, and published by Prime Matter. Released on September 21, 2023, the game continues the iconic heist-focused series, allowing players to once again step into the shoes of skilled criminals executing high-stakes robberies with precision, teamwork, and strategy.

Payday 3 takes place after the events of Payday 2, where the crew had gone their separate ways and seemingly left their life of crime behind. However, circumstances force the gang to return to their heisting ways. Overkill confirmed that the original crew from Payday: The Heist — Dallas, Chains, Wolf, and Hoxton — will all make their comeback. The story unfolds mainly in New York City, offering a fresh yet familiar urban playground for their daring robberies. Unlike the previous entries set in the 2010s, Payday 3 is set in the 2020s, reflecting modern-day challenges such as mass surveillance and the rise of cryptocurrency, both of which influence the game’s world and mechanics.

Overkill Software, a subsidiary of Starbreeze Studios following a $30 million acquisition that included the Payday intellectual property, encountered significant financial difficulties during the early stages of Payday 3’s development. However, the project was revived in 2021 after Starbreeze signed a €50 million publishing deal with Koch Media, allowing production to resume in full force. Unlike the previous Payday titles that were built using Grin’s Diesel engine, Payday 3 was developed with Unreal Engine 4, with plans to upgrade to Unreal Engine 5 after release. On January 1, 2023, Starbreeze officially confirmed that the game would launch later that year on both PC and consoles.

From the chaotic street shootouts reminiscent of Heat to the eerie clown masks from The Dark Knight’s iconic opening, Hollywood has long romanticized the thrill of a bank heist. Thankfully, the Payday series has allowed players to live out that fantasy for over a decade—without the risk of a criminal record. The latest installment, Payday 3, has finally broken free after years in development. While it proudly continues the franchise’s tradition of delivering one of the most exciting digital heist experiences, it’s also weighed down by familiar problems—buggy performance, a limited number of missions, and a weak storyline. Still, if Payday 2’s long-term success and robust updates are anything to go by, Payday 3 could be the start of another prosperous era for virtual thieves and their loyal crews.

Much like its predecessor, Payday 3 is a cooperative multiplayer first-person shooter that invites up to four players to execute increasingly complex robberies. The story, though minimal, revolves around the same group of infamous criminals who are dragged out of retirement by a mysterious organization shrouded in secrecy. Familiar faces return—Hoxton, the chain-smoking strategist, and Chains, the wisecracking ex-soldier—each bringing their trademark personalities to the chaos. However, the narrative itself feels thin, largely existing as a series of slides with voiceovers linking one job to the next. In one unexpected twist, players even team up with Ice-T—yes, the Law & Order legend himself—for a special mission. It’s a fun cameo that adds a dose of personality but doesn’t do much to strengthen the shallow storyline. Still, while the plot remains underwhelming, it provides just enough context to keep the action moving and hints at an intriguing future for the criminal crew.
