WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME ?
The Last of Us is a third-person action-adventure and survival horror video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first released on June 14, 2013, for the PlayStation 3. Originally developed exclusively for this platform, the game later received a remastered version titled The Last of Us: Remastered, which included all downloadable content and was released on July 29, 2014, for the PlayStation 4.
The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world following a pandemic caused by the Cordyceps fungus, which infects humans and takes control of their bodies. The two main characters, Joel and Ellie, must survive together as they journey across the ruins of the United States.
The game received overwhelming critical acclaim, with many reviewers calling it a masterpiece. The Last of Us won numerous awards from the gaming press, including several “Best of E3” honors during E3 2012, even before its release. Upon launch, it sold 1.17 million copies in a single day, and within a month, over 3.4 million copies, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation 3 title of 2013 (later surpassed by Grand Theft Auto V).
By June 14, 2018, marking the game’s fifth anniversary, Naughty Dog announced that The Last of Us had sold over 17 million copies worldwide across all versions. This achievement made it the best-selling PlayStation studio game at the time, surpassing Gran Turismo 3 and its 15 million sales.
The sequel, The Last of Us Part II, was released on June 19, 2020, for the PlayStation 4. A remake titled The Last of Us Part I launched on September 2, 2022, for PlayStation 5, and later on March 28, 2023, for Microsoft Windows. Additionally, a television adaptation of the game premiered on HBO in 2023, further expanding the franchise’s legacy.
The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic world, twenty years after a devastating pandemic wiped out much of human civilization. The two main characters, Joel and Ellie, must scavenge for supplies and ammunition as they journey across the country, facing both infected creatures and hostile survivors.
The comic series The Last of Us: American Dreams reveals that the outbreak began six years before Ellie was born, offering additional background to the game’s universe.
The Last of Us is a third-person shooter that offers five difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, Hard, Survivor, and Realistic. The game’s story unfolds over roughly one year, from mid-2033 to mid-2034. The long journeys that Joel and Ellie make across the United States are not shown directly, but are instead represented through cinematic transitions between seasons.
Players primarily control Joel, while Ellie and other companions are guided by AI (artificial intelligence). At certain moments, the player temporarily takes control of Sarah or Ellie.
The gameplay features gunfights, melee combat, and a cover system that adapts dynamically to the environment (activated by crouching near objects). Players must face both the infected — humans turned by the fungal plague — and survivors, uninfected humans who have become violent and dangerous in the struggle to survive.
