God of War Ragnarök is an action-adventure game where players take on the role of Kratos and his son as they strive to prevent the coming of Ragnarök. Throughout their journey across the Nine Realms, they face both human raiders and mythical creatures in intense close-quarters combat. Players can wield the Leviathan Axe and the chained Blades of Chaos to battle foes, leading to graphic encounters featuring bloodshed, dismemberments, and decapitations. The PC edition of God of War Ragnarök launched today, introducing two notable additions, including audio descriptions for all cinematics. In its announcement, PlayStation.Blog also highlighted the release of a special fan kit available on Santa Monica Studio’s official website. This kit features streamer alerts, social media banners, and wallpapers designed for fans to showcase their love for the game.

The gameplay is similar to the 2018 installment, featuring combo-based combat, puzzles, and role-playing elements. However, it has been revamped compared to its predecessor. In addition to Kratos' main weapons—his chained blades and magical war axe—a magical spear is introduced, and the shield becomes more versatile, offering various types with distinct defensive and offensive capabilities. His son Atreus, along with other characters, assists in combat and can be passively controlled. For the first time in the series, several story missions allow players to take control of Atreus, whose gameplay resembles Kratos’ but centers around a magical bow.

The game includes a wider variety of enemies and an increased number of mini-bosses compared to the previous title. Initially slated for release in 2021, its launch was delayed due to Christopher Judge’s health issues in 2019 and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on development. A free expansion titled Valhalla was released on December 12, 2023, serving as an epilogue to Ragnarök. It follows Kratos and his companion Mímir through a series of trials in Valhalla, aimed at helping Kratos come to terms with his past actions in Greece.

Ragnarök received widespread critical acclaim, praised for its story, characters, visuals, level design, music, and improvements over the previous game. It sold over 5.1 million copies in its first week, marking the best launch for a single-player game in PlayStation history, with over 15 million copies sold by November 2023. At The Game Awards 2022, it earned 11 nominations and won six. It also received 12 nominations at the 26th D.I.C.E. Awards, winning seven—including Adventure Game of the Year. At the 19th British Academy Games Awards, it garnered a record-breaking 15 nominations and won six awards, including Game of the Year.
