WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world action-adventure experience that blends cinematic storytelling with dynamic combat and stealth gameplay. Alongside the central narrative, players can explore a collection of side tales that enrich the journey. While inspired by historical themes, the game is a fictional interpretation meant to entertain rather than serve as a faithful account of real events.

In 1274 AD, the island of Tsushima faces devastation as the mighty Mongol Empire launches a brutal invasion, overwhelming the legendary samurai defenders of Japan and leaving only a handful alive. Among the survivors is Jin Sakai, a warrior forced to confront the reality that traditional samurai honor and tactics cannot secure victory against such a ruthless enemy. With the aid of trusted allies, Jin begins to carve out a new path, abandoning strict tradition to embrace a different style of warfare. This transformation gives rise to the Ghost, a symbol of resistance who fights an unorthodox battle to liberate Tsushima and safeguard Japan’s future.

Ghost of Tsushima features complete voice acting in both Japanese and English, along with a variety of subtitle language options. The English performances were recorded by Sucker Punch, while the Japanese voice work was directed and produced by SIE Japan Studio. Players can freely switch between voice and subtitle languages at any point during the game, allowing them to tailor the experience to their preference.  As the most successful indie game of modern times, Minecraft has earned its acclaim. Developed by Notch, it has captivated millions of players across platforms including iOS, Android, Xbox 360, Linux, Mac, and Windows.

Ghost of Tsushima was first announced by Sucker Punch Productions during Paris Games Week on October 30, 2017. A year later, its gameplay made its debut at E3 2018. The title was initially scheduled for release on June 26, 2020, but the launch was delayed to July 17, 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The game officially went gold on June 22, 2020, signaling the completion of its development.

In 1274, the Mongol army led by Khotun Khan—a fictional cousin of Kublai Khan—lands on the shores of the Japanese island of Tsushima. They are met by 80 samurai under the command of the daimyo, Jitō Shimura (voiced by Akio Ōtsuka), and his nephew Jin Sakai (Kazuya Nakai), who was raised by Shimura after the murder of his father and the death of his mother, Shimura’s sister. The samurai are swiftly overwhelmed by the Mongols, who not only outnumber them but also benefit from Khotun Khan’s strategic knowledge—he has studied the samurai code of honor and tactics to use them against their practitioners. Jin Sakai is left for dead after the massacre.

Upon awakening, Jin discovers he has been rescued by a thief named Yuna (Yufu Mizuno), who asks him to help save her brother Taka, a prisoner of the Mongols. Jin promises to help but first attempts to rescue his uncle, held captive at Kaneda Castle. He fails, defeated by Khotun Khan.

Jin then joins forces with Yuna to free Taka, who in gratitude begins forging weapons for Jin’s forces. Jin also recruits Ishikawa (Shigeru Chiba), the peninsula’s greatest archer whose student has defected to the Mongols; Lady Masako (Mabuki Andou), the last survivor of the Adachi clan, which was slaughtered by a rival clan taking advantage of the invasion; and Ryuzo, Jin’s childhood friend and leader of the Straw Hat ronin mercenaries. As Jin’s journey progresses, he begins to question his samurai teachings and adopts less honorable—but more effective—methods of combat.

During a renewed assault on Kaneda Castle, Jin is betrayed by Ryuzo, who joins the Mongols in exchange for food for his starving men. Despite this, Jin succeeds in freeing Shimura and reclaiming the castle.

Jin gains a new ally, Norio, a warrior monk, and the Shogun Koreyasu sends reinforcements from the mainland, led by his personal standard-bearer Lord Sadamune Oga, to retake Shimura’s estate from the Khan. Jin is eventually captured by Khotun Khan, and although he escapes, Taka dies trying to rescue him, deeply affecting Yuna. The first assault fails, as traditional samurai tactics prove ineffective. Against his uncle’s wishes, Jin infiltrates the fortress, poisons the Mongols’ drink supply, and kills Ryuzo—but the Khan escapes once again.

Appalled by Jin’s dishonorable actions, Shimura has him imprisoned. Jin escapes weeks later, and with his allies, locates the Khan at Tsushima’s northernmost port, where he is preparing to invade the mainland. Putting aside their differences, the samurai and Jin’s allies unite against the Mongols, and Jin ultimately kills Khotun Khan.

After the victory, Jin learns that the Shogun has declared him a traitor and ordered Shimura to execute him. Forced to fight his uncle, Jin defeats him, and the player is given a choice: uphold the samurai code by killing Shimura to spare him dishonor, or fully embrace the identity of the Ghost of Tsushima, protecting the people while being hunted by the samurai. Choosing the latter, Jin spares his uncle’s life.
