WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME ?
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a 2017 survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. Marking a bold shift from the action-heavy gameplay of Resident Evil 5 and 6, this installment returns to the franchise’s horror roots with a focus on tension, exploration, and atmosphere. For the first time in the main series, the game adopts a first-person perspective, heightening immersion and fear. Players take control of Ethan Winters, an ordinary civilian searching for his missing wife, Mia, at a decaying plantation in Dulvey, Louisiana. What begins as a desperate rescue quickly turns into a nightmare as Ethan encounters the deranged and infected Baker family.
Built entirely on Capcom’s in-house RE Engine, Resident Evil 7 marked a major technical leap for the series. Directed by Koshi Nakanishi, who previously helmed Resident Evil: Revelations, the development team aimed to recapture the claustrophobic dread of early entries. Drawing inspiration from horror films like The Evil Dead (1981), the game limits its setting to a single, meticulously detailed location. It was first teased as the VR demo Kitchen before its official reveal at E3 2016. Two story-based DLCs, Not a Hero and End of Zoe, expanded the narrative after release.
The game launched in January 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows, later receiving versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and cloud editions on Nintendo Switch, as well as iOS and macOS in 2024. It also supports full PlayStation VR integration, offering one of the most immersive horror experiences in gaming. Critically acclaimed for its tension, setting, and atmosphere, Resident Evil 7 sold over 15.4 million copies as of mid-2025, becoming the fifth best-selling title in the series.
Gameplay
Resident Evil 7 plays from a first-person viewpoint, allowing players to explore the creepy Baker estate in detail. As Ethan, players scavenge for weapons, ammunition, and healing items while solving puzzles to progress. Combat emphasizes survival and strategy—enemies are resilient, and direct confrontation is risky. Players can block attacks to reduce damage or crouch to hide from danger.
The game introduces grotesque enemies known as the “Molded,” fungal creatures that stalk Ethan through dark hallways. Despite his lack of combat training, Ethan finds various weapons, including handguns, shotguns, and improvised flamethrowers. Ammunition is limited, pushing players to use stealth, resource management, and quick thinking to survive. Safe rooms scattered throughout the estate allow players to store items, craft supplies, and save progress via tape recorders. Exploration is key, as hidden objects and VHS tapes reveal clues and expand the story.
Story
Set in 2017, Ethan receives a mysterious message from Mia, who has been missing for three years. Tracing her to a decaying plantation, he finds her imprisoned but soon realizes something is terribly wrong. Mia suddenly turns violent, forcing Ethan to defend himself. Soon after, he is captured by the terrifying Baker family—Jack, Marguerite, Lucas, and their silent grandmother—and subjected to their sadistic games. With help from Zoe, the Bakers’ daughter, Ethan learns that the family has been infected by a mysterious bioweapon known as Eveline.
Eveline, a young girl capable of controlling others through a psychotropic mold, sees the Bakers as her “family.” As Ethan battles his way through the estate, he must collect ingredients for a serum that can cure the infection. Depending on player choice, Ethan can save either Mia or Zoe, leading to branching consequences.
Eventually, Ethan discovers that Mia was part of a secret organization transporting Eveline aboard a ship before it crashed near the plantation, infecting everyone aboard. After confronting Eveline’s monstrous form, Ethan kills her with a special toxin. The game ends with the arrival of a rescue team led by series veteran Chris Redfield, who extracts Ethan from the nightmare.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard revitalized the franchise by blending classic survival horror with modern gameplay and immersive storytelling. Its focus on atmosphere, realism, and psychological tension reestablished Resident Evil as one of the premier names in horror gaming.
