Need for Speed Heat (stylized as NFS Heat) is a 2019 open-world racing game developed by Ghost Games and published by Electronic Arts for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows. As the twenty-fourth entry in the long-running Need for Speed franchise, it marked the series’ 25th anniversary. The game received mixed reviews, with critics noting it as a clear improvement over Need for Speed (2015) and Payback, yet still short of the series’ golden era. Heat would be Ghost Games’ final title in the franchise before EA transferred development back to Criterion Games in 2020, reverting Ghost Games to its former name, EA Gothenburg, to serve as a Frostbite engine support studio. The game’s successor, Need for Speed Unbound, launched in 2022.

Set in the fictional Palm City, inspired by Miami, Florida, Need for Speed Heat offers a vibrant open world filled with urban roads, forests, mountains, and countryside routes. Unlike Payback, it doesn’t feature a continuous day-night cycle; instead, players can choose between daytime and nighttime gameplay. By day, racers participate in legitimate SpeedHunters Showdown events, earning cash to upgrade and customize vehicles. By night, they engage in illegal street races to earn REP, a reputation currency used to unlock new parts and races.

Racing at night carries greater risks, as a corrupt police task force led by Lieutenant Frank Mercer patrols the streets, aggressively targeting street racers. Players must balance reward and risk — finishing a night session and reaching a garage safely multiplies earned REP based on their heat level, while being busted results in fines and loss of progression for that night. Pursuits vary depending on the time of day: daytime chases are less intense, while nighttime police are far more relentless.

The game features 127 cars from 33 manufacturers, including the long-awaited return of Ferrari, missing from Payback due to licensing issues. Upgrades are straightforward — performance parts are unlocked by earning REP, removing the controversial “Speedcard” system used in Payback. Heat contains no loot boxes, though it includes optional paid DLC and “time savers” that reveal collectibles on the map.

Beyond races, Palm City is filled with activities and collectibles. Players can smash neon flamingos, locate and use street art designs in their car liveries, break billboards, complete drift zones, reach record speeds through speed traps, and perform long jumps. Cooperative “Crew Time Trials” allow crews to compete for leaderboard dominance.

Ahead of the release, EA launched the NFS Heat Studio app for mobile, enabling players to design and import custom cars directly into the full game. In June 2020, Heat received its final update, introducing cross-platform play, making it the first Need for Speed game to support that feature.

The game’s storyline follows the player, a newcomer to Palm City (voiced by Andrew Lawrence or Jamie Gray Hyder), who arrives to compete in the SpeedHunters Showdown. There, they meet Lucas Rivera, a local mechanic and ex-street racer who becomes their mentor, and his sister Ana Rivera, an ambitious racer seeking revenge against Mercer’s corrupt police task force, which nearly killed her friend and dismantled her former crew.

Ana introduces the player to The League, an elite group of top street racers. Together, they aim to earn recognition and expose Mercer’s corruption. After witnessing officer Shaw extorting racers, Ana and the player uncover Mercer’s secret — his task force is running a car-smuggling ring, seizing vehicles under false pretenses and selling them illegally.

The duo, with the help of officer Eva Torres, who secretly opposes Mercer, gather evidence to expose him. Their plan leads to a dramatic confrontation: Mercer kidnaps Ana and the player but is stopped by Lucas, who rescues them and helps steal Mercer’s laptop. Using it, the group leaks incriminating files to the media, forcing Mercer into hiding.

In the climax, Mercer attempts to flee Palm City, transporting stolen cars through the port. Ana, Lucas, and the player rally The League to block his escape, triggering a massive showdown between racers and police. Mercer tries to escape in a BMW M3 GTR—a nod to Need for Speed: Most Wanted—but the player destroys his car. He is later confronted by Torres, who ends his reign of corruption.

A week later, Mercer is missing and presumed dead. Torres takes over his task force, pledging reform, while Lucas reconciles with Ana, gifting her their father’s restored 1967 Chevrolet Camaro. United as members of The League, Ana and the player look ahead to future races — determined to keep the spirit of street racing alive in Palm City.
