WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME ?
Dark Souls II is a 2014 action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Games. It is the second installment in the Dark Souls series, set in the mysterious kingdom of Drangleic. The story follows an undead traveler seeking a cure for their curse, which slowly erodes their humanity. Although it introduces a new setting and characters, the game maintains the challenging combat, intricate world design, and cryptic storytelling that define the series, while introducing new mechanics such as the “hollowing” system, which penalizes repeated deaths by reducing the player’s maximum health.
After several delays, Dark Souls II launched globally in March 2014 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, followed by a Windows version in April. The game was both a commercial and critical success, praised for its dark atmosphere, interconnected environments, deep lore, and visual improvements. However, opinions were divided regarding its difficulty balance and boss design, with some critics considering its combat less refined than that of the original Dark Souls. Notably, it is the only entry in the trilogy not directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, who served as a supervisor rather than lead director.
Three downloadable content expansions were released throughout 2014, adding new regions, weapons, and lore elements. In 2015, an enhanced edition titled Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin was released, featuring all DLCs, improved visuals, expanded lore, and gameplay refinements. It was made available on both previous and current-generation consoles, as well as PC. The game’s story and thematic legacy would continue with Dark Souls III in 2016.
Gameplay in Dark Souls II follows the core formula of the series: players navigate hostile environments filled with deadly enemies and traps. Both regular foes and bosses can defeat the player in only a few hits, emphasizing caution and skillful combat. Health recovery is limited, and every death carries significant consequences. With each death, the player loses all collected “souls”—the game’s currency and experience points—and their maximum health gradually decreases through the hollowing mechanic, until a certain limit is reached. Lost souls can be retrieved if the player returns to the site of their death, but dying again before doing so results in their permanent loss.
Multiplayer returns with cooperative and competitive modes. Players can be summoned into another’s world for co-op assistance or invade to engage in PvP combat. These encounters are governed by matchmaking systems that balance player levels and equipment strength. The game also introduces covenants—factions that reward players for specific multiplayer actions such as protecting zones, invading, or assisting others.
Difficulty adjustment is woven into the game’s design rather than a menu setting. Items and equipment found early in the game allow less experienced players to enhance their survivability, while skilled players can pursue high-risk, high-reward options. Items can also mitigate penalties such as the health reduction upon death. Dark Souls II also features a robust New Game Plus mode, allowing players to replay the game while retaining levels and gear, facing stronger enemies and new item placements.
The story begins with a cursed human who travels to Drangleic in search of a cure. Guided by the mysterious Emerald Herald, the player must collect four Great Souls from powerful undead beings. Once this is accomplished, the Herald directs the player to seek King Vendrick, ruler of the fallen kingdom. Upon reaching the capital, the player encounters Queen Nashandra, who claims the king has abandoned his throne and urges the player to slay him. As the journey progresses, it is revealed that Nashandra herself is the true cause of Drangleic’s downfall. A fragment of Manus, the Dark Lord from the first game’s DLC, she manipulated Vendrick into invading the land of the giants, seeking their power. The giants retaliated, destroying Drangleic. Realizing Nashandra’s deception, Vendrick sealed himself within the Undead Crypt, leaving the Throne of Want beyond her reach.
In Scholar of the First Sin, a new character—Aldia, Vendrick’s brother—is introduced, appearing throughout the game to question the endless cycle of light and dark. Upon completing the DLC and confronting both Aldia and Nashandra, the player is offered a new choice: to take the throne and continue the cycle, or to reject it entirely and seek a path beyond light and dark.
Ultimately, Dark Souls II deepens the series’ philosophical exploration of struggle, choice, and fate—inviting players to confront not just enemies, but the cyclical nature of despair and renewal that defines its haunting world.
