WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME ?
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a third-person action role-playing game where players take control of Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster hunter known as a Witcher. Geralt can walk, run, roll, dodge, jump, climb, and swim, making his movement more fluid and dynamic than in previous entries. He wields a range of weapons, including bombs, a crossbow, and two swords—a steel sword for fighting humans and a silver sword for battling monsters. Players can freely draw, switch, and sheathe their weapons, using light attacks for speed and heavy attacks for power, while also blocking or countering enemy blows. Weapons wear down over time and must be repaired regularly to maintain effectiveness.
In addition to melee combat, Geralt can use five magical signs Aard, Axii, Igni, Yrden, and Queneach offering a unique tactical advantage: Aard unleashes a telekinetic blast, Axii manipulates enemies’ minds, Igni releases fire, Yrden slows foes with a magical trap, and Quen provides a temporary protective shield. These signs consume stamina, limiting how often they can be cast. Players can further enhance Geralt’s magical and physical abilities through mutagens.
Geralt’s health decreases when taking damage but can be restored by meditation, food, or potions, while armor helps reduce the impact of attacks. At specific points in the story, players also take control of Ciri, Geralt’s adoptive daughter, who has her own unique abilities, including the power to teleport short distances, adding variety to the gameplay experience.
Set in a dark fantasy world, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt follows Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter known as a Witcher, whose adopted daughter Ciri is pursued by the Wild Hunt, a spectral force from another world. While the game includes references to Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, its story is original and serves as a conclusion to the trilogy that began with the first game eight years earlier.
Unlike its predecessors, The Witcher 3 features a vast open world explored from a third-person perspective, emphasizing Geralt’s combat and investigative skills as he undertakes monster contracts, explores richly detailed environments, and navigates a branching main quest with multiple outcomes — leading to 36 different possible endings. Alongside the main story, the game offers a multitude of side quests, each adding depth to its narrative world.
Developed over three and a half years with production values on par with major Western AAA titles, the game represented an ambitious step for Polish studio CD Projekt Red. The developers aimed to cement Europe’s place in the RPG genre, moving further away from the canonical storyline of Sapkowski’s novels while honoring their spirit and tone, deeply respected in Poland.
Selling over 10 million copies within a year of release, The Witcher 3 achieved universal acclaim from both critics and players, becoming a massive commercial and cultural success. It won a record number of “Game of the Year” awards and quickly became the new benchmark for action-RPGs, often used as a point of comparison for evaluating future titles in the genre.
Two major expansions followed — Hearts of Stone (October 2015) and Blood and Wine (May 2016) — both highly praised for their quality and storytelling. In 2017, CD Projekt Red also released Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, a full standalone title based on the in-game card game featured within The Witcher 3.
