WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME ?
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (commonly known as GTA: San Andreas or simply San Andreas) is an open-world action-adventure and third-person shooter developed by Rockstar North in Scotland. The game was initially released in October 2004 for the PlayStation 2, and later in June 2005 for Xbox and Microsoft Windows (PC). It stands as the seventh installment in the Grand Theft Auto series and the final major title of the franchise’s 3D universe, preceding the transition to the HD era with Grand Theft Auto IV.
The story unfolds in the fictional state of San Andreas, composed of three major cities inspired by real-life locations — Los Santos (Los Angeles), San Fierro (San Francisco), and Las Venturas (Las Vegas). The map also includes mountains, deserts, lakes, and forests, creating a vast and diverse environment. Set in 1992, the plot follows Carl “CJ” Johnson, a gang member returning to Los Santos after his mother’s murder. Determined to uncover the truth and restore his gang’s reputation, CJ navigates a world of crime, betrayal, and corruption, seeking to reclaim power and influence.
Upon its release, GTA: San Andreas achieved massive critical and commercial success, though it was also surrounded by controversy due to its graphic violence and the infamous “Hot Coffee” mini-game, which provoked public backlash despite being inaccessible in normal gameplay.
Thanks to its enduring popularity, the game was ported to multiple platforms, including macOS, iOS, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Network. In 2021, Rockstar launched Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, a remastered collection of the three classic 3D-era titles, including San Andreas. In 2023, the game was also added to the Netflix streaming library, allowing a new generation of players to experience this legendary title.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a third-person action-adventure game in which players take on the role of Carl "CJ" Johnson, a criminal who completes missions—structured story-based objectives—to advance the plot. Outside of these missions, players are free to explore the open world and take on optional side activities. The game also includes a two-player local multiplayer mode, allowing cooperative gameplay.
The story takes place in the fictional state of San Andreas, which consists of three major cities—Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas. These cities gradually become accessible as the player progresses through the story, while airports enable fast travel between them. Players can also purchase safehouses across the map to save progress and store vehicles.
CJ can move by running, swimming, or driving a wide range of vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, airplanes, boats, and even RC vehicles—over 180 in total. Combat features melee attacks, firearms, and explosives, with the option to dual-wield weapons or shoot from moving vehicles. Weapons can be purchased, found, or taken from defeated enemies, and the game includes an auto-aim system for targeting foes. Health can be restored using recovery items, while body armor absorbs damage from bullets and explosions. If CJ dies, he respawns at the nearest hospital.
The game’s wanted level system determines police response: each star represents a higher level of law enforcement pursuit, culminating in military intervention at six stars. The wanted level decreases if the player avoids detection for a period of time.
Players can capture and defend gang territories by defeating rival gangs in multiple waves of combat. These areas can later be attacked again, requiring defense to retain control. Beyond combat, San Andreas offers numerous side activities, including burglary, firefighting, taxi driving, vigilante missions, and more. Completing them rewards players with money, which can be spent on clothing, accessories, tattoos, and haircuts, introducing light RPG elements to the series.
CJ’s appearance and physical abilities are affected by diet and exercise: eating and training improve fitness, while neglect leads to weight gain or muscle loss, which influences performance in combat. Players can also learn three fighting styles—boxing, kickboxing, and martial arts—at different gyms. CJ’s reputation and relationships with friends and girlfriends evolve based on his actions and appearance, while skills such as driving, shooting, stamina, strength, and lung capacity improve with experience, unlocking new gameplay mechanics and abilities.
