WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME ?
Alex Hunter, the protagonist introduced in FIFA 17, returns for the third and final chapter of The Journey story mode, titled "The Journey: Champions", where players follow his rise to the top of European football. In June 2019, a free update was released, adding the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final to the Kick-Off mode. Later, the game’s online servers were gradually shut down — first for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on February 14, 2023, and then for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 6, 2023.
FIFA 19 introduced several major gameplay innovations designed to enhance realism and player control. Among them is the Active Touch System, a complete revamp of how players receive and control the ball, and Timed Finishing, which allows players to press the shoot button a second time to precisely control the timing of their strike. The game also features 50/50 Battles, a new mechanic that determines a player’s likelihood of winning loose balls, and Dynamic Tactics, enabling players to set up and seamlessly switch between tactical approaches during matches.
For the first time in the series, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Super Cup competitions were officially included, following the end of Konami’s exclusivity deal with Pro Evolution Soccer. The game also supports promotion and relegation between the European tournaments. Commentary is provided by Martin Tyler and Alan Smith for regular matches, while Derek Rae and Lee Dixon handle Champions League coverage, alongside Geoff Shreeves as the sideline reporter and Alan McInally delivering live updates. Additionally, new graphics, presentation elements, and stadiums were introduced to elevate the overall match-day experience.
The Journey
The Journey mode, first introduced in FIFA 17, returns in this installment under the title The Journey: Champions, featuring Alex Hunter, Kim Hunter, and Danny Williams.[6] However, this mode will not appear in future releases, as Electronic Arts planned The Journey as a trilogy.[7]
Story
After a recap of the previous journey, the game begins with Alex Hunter, his half-sister Kim, and Danny Williams watching a video of their grandfather, Jim Hunter, scoring his 100th career goal for his first-division club at Coventry City. The story then jumps to summer 2018, where Alex and Danny train with their teams for a pre-season friendly tournament in Japan, culminating in a final showdown between their respective squads. Meanwhile, Kim is in Los Angeles, training with the U.S. national team ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in France, quickly forming a partnership with teammate Alex Morgan.
Alex also meets Beatriz Villanova, the football agent who reached out to him at the end of the previous journey. She promises to turn him into a global football icon and soon secures him a five-year contract with Real Madrid, prompting Alex to move to Spain. Both Alex and Danny’s teams advance through the Champions League, though Alex struggles with the increasing demands of sponsorships and branding, creating tension with his family. This strain is highlighted when Kim visits him before the World Cup, and Alex misses her at the airport due to commitments with his new clothing line, upsetting Kim and their mother. As a result, Alex is initially removed from the starting lineup and must fight his way back into the team to regain his coach’s trust. Danny faces his own challenges with management, having to choose between his friend Ringo and his agent regarding a potential move. Despite these struggles, both teams reach the semi-finals.
Kim qualifies for the World Cup in France, her partnership with Morgan growing stronger. However, after a disagreement over her benching, she is temporarily removed from the starting lineup and nearly sent home. Thanks to her exceptional skills, the manager reinstates her for the final group match, helping the team advance to the round of 16. Alex and Beatriz visit Kim before the first knockout match, with Beatriz encouraging her to go pro rather than attend college—a suggestion initially opposed by her father but gradually reconsidered as the tournament progresses. In the Champions League, Alex faces Juventus while Danny reunites with his brother, and both advance to the final after defeating their rivals. Danny and Terry reconcile at the end of the match.
In France, Kim prepares for the World Cup final against Canada, despite nearly being ruled out due to discussions about professional contracts, which are prohibited in international play. If Kim’s team wins, the U.S. secures their fourth World Cup, becoming the first nation to retain the trophy, and Kim hints at signing a professional contract and leaving Los Angeles. If they lose, she attends college but maintains hopes of turning professional. The narrative then shifts to the 2019 Champions League final at Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, where Real Madrid faces Danny’s Premier League team. Regardless of the outcome, the losing character accepts defeat gracefully while the winner celebrates being crowned the best club team in Europe. The game concludes with Jim Hunter telling Alex he has never been prouder and that upon retiring, Alex will become the greatest Hunter of all time, bringing his journey to a close.
