WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME ?
Dying Light: The Beast is a 2025 survival horror game developed and published by Techland. Initially planned as a DLC expansion for Dying Light 2: Stay Human, the project evolved into a standalone title due to its expanded scope and new gameplay systems.
Released on September 18, 2025, for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions following later that year, The Beast continues to build upon the franchise’s signature parkour mechanics, visceral melee combat, and day-night survival dynamics.
Set in a darker, more psychological chapter of the Dying Light universe, the game introduces new environments, mutated infected types, and a narrative focused on humanity’s final descent into chaos after the events of Stay Human.
Dying Light: The Beast is an action-adventure game played from a first-person perspective, set in Castor Woods, a once-popular rural tourist destination nestled in the Western Alps, now completely overrun by hordes of zombies. Players are free to explore the vast open world using protagonist Kyle Crane’s parkour abilities or by driving a 4x4 off-road vehicle, enabling both agility and mobility across treacherous terrain.
As in previous installments, zombies remain slow and sluggish in daylight, but become faster, stronger, and more aggressive at night, creating intense survival dynamics. Crane can wield an extensive arsenal of melee weapons and firearms, in addition to his enhanced physical abilities, which grant him superior speed and agility. A new gameplay mechanic, “Beast Mode,” allows Crane to unleash devastating bare-handed attacks, throw heavy environmental objects, and decimate groups of enemies with overwhelming force.
As players progress, they can unlock new skills and upgrades to enhance Crane’s combat efficiency and survival tactics. True to the series’ roots, Dying Light: The Beast also supports 4-player cooperative multiplayer, allowing teams to explore, fight, and survive together in the brutal world of Castor Woods.
The Beast was originally conceived as the second DLC for Dying Light 2: Stay Human. However, after the story and script were leaked by a dataminer in April 2023, Techland decided to rework it into a standalone game. The studio described The Beast as a more compact experience, shorter than both Dying Light titles and featuring a linear narrative instead of Dying Light 2’s branching story structure. According to franchise director Tymon Smektala, the decision to bring back Kyle Crane as the protagonist was met with excitement among the team. In this game, Crane is portrayed as older, haunted, and driven by revenge, once again voiced by Roger Craig Smith, who expressed surprise at reprising the role given Crane’s presumed death in The Following.
Techland emphasized a stronger focus on survival compared to Dying Light 2, aiming to recapture the tension and fear players felt in the original game. Weapons and vehicles now degrade quickly, forcing players to adapt and scavenge under pressure. The game is set in Castor Woods, a “rural, forested valley” inspired by Twin Peaks. Though the natural environment limits parkour opportunities, the world’s landmarks and structures are designed to still challenge players’ agility and traversal skills. The title runs on an evolved version of Techland’s C-Engine, offering improved visuals and environmental interactivity.
The Beast was officially revealed at Gamescom 2024. Initially slated for release in August 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, it was later delayed to September 2025. As a gesture of goodwill, owners of the Ultimate Edition of Dying Light 2 will receive The Beast for free, though Techland removed the Ultimate Edition from sale in September 2024.
