WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is a 2012 first-person shooter developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. Released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on November 13, 2012, and later for the Wii U, it serves as the direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) and the ninth entry in the Call of Duty franchise. A companion title, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified, was released for PlayStation Vita the same day.

Set across two timelines — the 1980s and the year 2025 — the campaign follows Alex Mason and Frank Woods in the past, and David Mason (Alex’s son, codenamed “Section”) in the future. Both storylines are connected through the central antagonist, Raul Menendez, a Nicaraguan arms dealer who evolves into a global terrorist leader. In the 1980s, Mason and Woods pursue Menendez, who is motivated by revenge after his sister Josefina is disfigured and his father killed due to U.S. involvement in Latin America. By 2025, Menendez has founded Cordis Die, a massive populist movement with over two billion followers, intent on starting a second Cold War through cyberwarfare.

The story opens in 1986, with Mason and Hudson rescuing Woods from captivity in Angola. During the mission, they encounter Menendez, who later becomes a recurring threat. The narrative then moves to Afghanistan, where Mason and Woods join Chinese agent Tian Zhao to fight the Soviets and confront Colonel Kravchenko, a remnant from Black Ops. Afterward, the team raids Menendez’s compound in Nicaragua, leading to the accidental death of his sister Josefina. Consumed by rage, Menendez vows vengeance. He fakes his death with the help of Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega. In 1989, during the U.S. invasion of Panama, Menendez captures Woods and Mason, forcing Hudson to lure them into a trap. Mason is apparently killed, Hudson is executed, and Woods is left crippled. Woods later raises David Mason, concealing the truth about his father’s death.

By 2025, technological warfare dominates the battlefield. Menendez, now a political icon and hacker, orchestrates global chaos through cyberattacks that pit the U.S. and China against each other. David Mason, now a DEVGRU commander, is tasked with stopping Menendez. He reunites with an elderly Woods, who recounts his history with Menendez. Missions take place in various international locations including Myanmar, the Cayman Islands, Yemen, and Haiti. With the help of CIA agent Farid and hacker Chloe Lynch (“Karma”), Mason’s team attempts to prevent Menendez’s cyber plot. However, Menendez infiltrates the U.S. Navy’s command ship, the USS Barack Obama, uploads a virus that hijacks American drones, and launches devastating attacks on major cities. The campaign concludes in Haiti, where the player can choose whether to kill or capture Menendez, leading to multiple possible endings.

Black Ops II introduced major gameplay innovations for the series. It was the first Call of Duty title to feature branching storylines, allowing player decisions to affect mission outcomes and endings. “Strike Force missions” give players control over various assets such as drones, robots, and jet fighters, with outcomes that permanently shape the campaign’s direction. For the first time, players could also customize loadouts before starting campaign missions, choosing weapons and perks to fit their play style.

Multiplayer received a complete overhaul with the Pick 10 system, which provides ten allocation points for weapons, perks, and equipment, allowing for highly flexible class customization. Killstreaks were replaced by Scorestreaks, rewarding players for completing objectives rather than only achieving kills. Weapons also gained a progression system that unlocks attachments and camo through experience, with players able to “prestige” individual weapons to earn cosmetic rewards.

Another major addition was League Play, a competitive mode that matched players by skill level according to Major League Gaming rules, marking the series’ first step toward esports integration.

Black Ops II also featured an expanded Zombies mode, with new maps, modes, and narrative elements, further building the sub-franchise’s popularity.

Upon release, Black Ops II was met with widespread critical acclaim for its ambitious storytelling, engaging gameplay, and robust multiplayer and Zombies modes. Critics praised its branching campaign and memorable villain, though some found the Strike Force missions uneven. Commercially, it was a massive success, grossing over $500 million within 24 hours, setting a record for the biggest entertainment launch at the time — a record later surpassed by Grand Theft Auto V in 2013. The game sold over 7.5 million copies in the U.S. during its first month.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III followed in 2015, while Black Ops Cold War (2020) served as a prequel bridging the first two games. Black Ops 6 (2024) and Black Ops 7 (2025) continue expanding the timeline, cementing Black Ops II as a pivotal and influential entry in the Call of Duty saga — one that defined the franchise’s evolution into cinematic, choice-driven warfare.
