Assassin's Creed Odyssey is an action-adventure and role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Québec and published by Ubisoft in October 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It is the eleventh main installment in the Assassin's Creed series and the direct successor to Assassin's Creed Origins. Like its predecessor, the game features a vast open world and incorporates many RPG elements, placing greater emphasis on combat and exploration rather than stealth. Naval battles, which were prominent in earlier titles, also play a significant role in Odyssey.

The game's storyline revolves around the mythological backdrop of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, which took place from 431 to 422 BCE. Players take on the role of a Spartan mercenary who fights for both sides in an effort to reunite with their family and eliminate the mysterious Cult of Kosmos. Odyssey also continues the modern-day narrative of Layla Hassan, a key character introduced in Origins, who relives the mercenary's memories using a device called the Animus in order to locate a powerful artifact—the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus.

The main story of the game follows the eldest sibling of a family known as the Eagle Bearer—a legendary mercenary who can fight either for Athens and the Delian League or for the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta. The player embodies this character, who is a descendant of King Leonidas (voiced by Elias Toufexis), and can choose to play as either Kassandra (voiced by Melissanthi Mahut) or Alexios (voiced by Michael Antonakos). It’s important to note that the choice of character does not affect the overall storyline, with Kassandra being considered the canonical protagonist.

Like its predecessors, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey presents a storyline set both in the modern day and in ancient times. In the present, the narrative follows Layla Hassan (voiced by Chantel Riley), a former Abstergo researcher turned assassin, first introduced in Origins. Assisted by her fellow assassins—Victoria Bibeau, Kiyoshi Takakura, and Alannah Ryan—Layla seeks the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus and the lost city of Atlantis, using data processed through her portable Animus device. Through this technology, Layla relives a mythological and historical tale set during the Peloponnesian War, a conflict between the Greek city-states of Athens and Sparta. The events unfold between 431 and 422 BCE, about four centuries before Assassin’s Creed Origins and the foundation of the Hidden Ones, the precursors of the Assassin Brotherhood.

The main story follows the Eagle Bearer, a legendary mercenary and descendant of King Leonidas of Sparta (voiced by Elias Toufexis). In punishment, Nikolaos, their father, is forced by Spartan leaders to cast Kassandra from the cliff. She miraculously survives and is taken in by Markos, a small-time con artist from Kephallonia, under whose guidance she grows up performing odd jobs and mercenary work.

Throughout the journey, the Eagle Bearer strives to reunite their fragmented family, dismantle the Cult of Kosmos—a secret organization manipulating Greek politics—and uncover ancient Atlantean artifacts and mythical creatures, blending history, legend, and destiny in one epic adventure.
