Total War: Warhammer II (TWW2, WH2) is a hybrid turn-based and real-time strategy title created by Creative Assembly and published by SEGA, set within the Warhammer Fantasy universe crafted by Games Workshop. Serving as the direct sequel to Total War: Warhammer and preceding Total War: Warhammer III, the game expands the series with six new playable races the High Elves, Lizardmen, Dark Elves, Skaven, Tomb Kings, and Vampire Coast.

In addition to these factions, the game features two major campaigns: Eye of the Vortex and Mortal Empires, alongside a wide range of new mechanics and enhancements that enrich both strategic planning and battlefield engagements.

Total War: Warhammer II was released globally on September 28, 2017 for PC, followed by its launch on macOS and Linux on November 20, 2018.

The second entry in the acclaimed trilogy and the successor to the award-winning Total War: WARHAMMER, Total War: WARHAMMER II delivers an epic new narrative campaign set across the sprawling continents of Lustria, Ulthuan, Naggaroth, and The Southlands. At its heart lies the Great Vortex Campaign, a race against time that builds toward a climactic finale—offering an experience unlike anything seen in a Total War game before.

Players take on the role of a Legendary Lord from the Warhammer Fantasy Battles universe, tasked with carrying out a series of powerful arcane rituals to either stabilize or disrupt the Great Vortex—all while thwarting rival factions. Each Legendary Lord begins in a unique starting location, and every race introduces its own distinct playstyle, complete with exclusive campaign mechanics, storylines, armies, monsters, magical lores, legendary characters, and devastating battlefield bombardment abilities.

As with the first game, Total War: Warhammer II features additional content, sometimes free (FLC – Free-LC), but often paid (DLC). These expansions mainly add new factions, heroes, and Legendary Lords. Free-LC updates typically expand or deepen faction-specific mechanics.

It’s important to note that DLC purchased for the first game also carries over to the second one, ensuring continuity between titles. The same will apply to the third entry in the trilogy.

Mortal Empires

This first free update, available to players who own both Warhammer I and Warhammer II, introduces an entirely new campaign type featuring a massive combined map that merges the two games’ campaign worlds. To access it, both titles must be installed. Mortal Empires was released on October 28, 2017.

Blood for the Blood God

As in the first Total War: Warhammer, this DLC adds blood and gore effects to battles. However, players who already own the first game’s version receive it for free in Warhammer II.

Rise of the Tomb Kings

This DLC introduces the Tomb Kings, a brand-new faction with four new Legendary Lords — Settra the Imperishable, High Queen Khalida, Arkhan the Black, and Khatep. They are playable in both the Vortex and Mortal Empires campaigns. The expansion adds new campaign mechanics such as a unique item-crafting system and limited army and unit caps.

The Queen & the Crone

This DLC pits Hellebron of the Dark Elves against Alarielle of the High Elves, with Alith Anar (from Gav Thorpe’s novel trilogy) also joining the High Elf roster. It introduces 16 new Regiments of Renown across multiple factions and adds Norsca to the Mortal Empires map.

Curse of the Vampire Coast

This expansion introduces the Vampire Coast, a new faction featuring four Legendary Lords with unique campaign mechanics playable in both Vortex and Mortal Empires modes. In April 2018, Creative Assembly announced this would be the final DLC to introduce a new faction for Warhammer II.

The Warlock & the Prophet

This DLC adds Tehenhauin, Prophet of Sotek, and Ikit Claw, the Skaven Warlock Engineer, as new Legendary Lords for the Lizardmen and Skaven factions. It also introduces new campaign regions, new faction mechanics (such as Bretonnia’s Vows system), and unique units.

The Hunter & the Beast

This DLC introduces two new Legendary Lords — one for the Lizardmen and one for the Empire — each with their own mechanics and playstyles. The accompanying update overhauls Empire gameplay, reworks several provinces, and includes a free Legendary Lord for the Lizardmen faction.

As additional free content, Gotrek & Felix were added as a Legendary Lord and Hero respectively. Based on popular Black Library novels, these two fan-favorite characters were highly requested. Notably, Gotrek is voiced by Brian Blessed.

The Shadow & the Blade

Released in December 2019, this DLC introduces Malus Darkblade (from novels by Dan Abnett and Mike Lee) for the Dark Elves and Deathmaster Snikch for the Skaven. The latter leads the Clan Eshin subfaction, featuring its own distinct mechanics similar to Clan Skryre’s. The DLC also adds Jeanne de Lyonesse, a free Legendary Lord for Bretonnia, and expands the campaign map — hinting at the upcoming Total War: Warhammer III.

The Warden & the Paunch

This DLC adds two new Lords: Eltharion for the High Elves and Grom the Paunch for the Greenskins, both playable in the Vortex campaign.

Eltharion leads Tor Yvresse, focusing on rebuilding and defending his city after an orc raid. His campaign includes a prisoner interrogation mechanic and the Athel Tamarha fortress, which can be upgraded to grant faction bonuses such as elite units or magical fog defenses.
Grom the Paunch, a goblin warlord seeking revenge for past defeats, uses a cauldron-based cooking system that lets him combine ingredients gathered during his campaign to grant buffs to himself, his armies, and his provinces.

Alongside this DLC, the Greenskins received a complete rework of their Waaagh! system, and the High Elves gained Imrik as a free Legendary Lord.
