WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME ?

Released on September 12, 2025, Borderlands 4 is an action role-playing looter shooter in first-person view, created by Gearbox Software and published by 2K. As the direct follow-up to Borderlands 3 (2019) and the fifth core entry in the franchise, the title arrived on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, earning largely favorable feedback from critics.
Like the earlier titles in the series, Borderlands 4 is a first-person looter shooter infused with action role-playing elements. Gearbox has described its world as 'seamless,' meaning players can move between regions without encountering loading screens. The game introduces new vehicles and traversal mechanics, including a grappling hook, and can be experienced either solo or in cooperative play with up to three additional players.

Borderlands 4 delivers explosive action, fearless Vault Hunters, and billions of deadly weapons on a brand-new planet ruled by a ruthless tyrant.

Step onto Kairos as one of four new Vault Hunters, each chasing fortune and glory. Harness devastating action skills, shape your playstyle with deep skill trees, and crush your foes using enhanced mobility and dynamic combat abilities.

Your mission: overthrow the oppressive Timekeeper, a merciless dictator who keeps the masses under his grip. But as a global catastrophe threatens his vision of perfect order, chaos spreads across the planet, setting the stage for your rebellion.

Borderlands 4: Reviews and Reception

Borderlands 4 received generally favorable reviews on Windows and PlayStation 5, while the Xbox Series X/S version achieved critical acclaim, according to Metacritic. Despite strong praise, critics pointed out several performance and optimization issues, especially on PC. In Japan, Famitsu’s four reviewers gave the game a combined score of 33/40, reflecting solid but not perfect reception.

Critics’ Impressions

  • Destructoid – Scott Duwe described Borderlands 4 as “a hallmark of excellence”, noting that although it had some flaws, they were minor. He called it the best game in the series since Borderlands 2, highlighting the outstanding gameplay and fun factor but mentioning concerning PC performance issues.

  • Digital Trends – Jesse Lennox praised the game’s more balanced tone, but felt that its humor still missed the mark at times.

  • Eurogamer – Rick Lane appreciated the more grounded script and true open-world design, yet criticized the repetitive exploration and slow-burning combat that took too long to become engaging.

  • Game Informer – Brian Shea stated that Gearbox had refined and reimagined core mechanics so effectively that Borderlands 4 surpassed all previous entries, calling it a chaotic looter-shooter worthy of the franchise’s golden era.

  • GameSpot – Jordan Ramée praised the playable Vault Hunters and loot system, but criticized the unmemorable main characters, uninspired side quests, and repetitive enemy designs.

  • GamesRadar – Andrew Brown lauded the huge weapon variety and art direction, though he found the story and antagonist dull.

  • Hardcore Gamer – Kevin Dunsmore admired the strong side content, boss design, and level structure, but felt the second act was weak and technical issues hindered the experience.

  • IGN – Travis Northup summarized the game as giving the franchise “the massive kick in the pants it needed”, commending its open world and combat improvements, though he noted occasional bugs and invisible walls.

  • PC Gamer – Harvey Randall wrote that even with a poor UI and choppy performance, the game still delivered “several dozen hours of numbers-go-up bliss.”

  • Push Square – Christian Kobza praised the shift to an open world, saying it rejuvenated the series. He warned of console performance problems but called the boss fights and side quests rewarding.

  • Shacknews – Sam Chandler highlighted the serious main campaign and humorous side missions, while pointing out frequent crashes and performance issues.

  • The Guardian – Steve Boxer described Borderlands 4 as “familiar and predictable, but also well-honed and significantly less juvenile,” ultimately calling it a blast to play.

  • Video Game Chronicle – Jordan Middler praised the abundant missions and satisfying loot system, though he criticized the forgettable cast and bland main narrative.

   Overall Summary:

Borderlands 4 is widely regarded as a strong return to form for the franchise, praised for its open world, gunplay, and refined mechanics, but held back by technical problems, lackluster characters, and a weak main story. Despite its flaws, many reviewers agree it’s the most fun and polished Borderlands experience since Borderlands 2.
