Final Fantasy VII Remake, released in 2020, is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4. The game is set in Midgar, a dystopian cyberpunk metropolis controlled by the powerful Shinra Corporation. Final Fantasy VII Remake replaces the original’s turn-based combat with a real-time action system blended with strategic role-playing elements. Battles utilize a modified Active Time Battle (ATB) system: the bar fills gradually or through attacks, allowing players to pause action to perform special abilities, magic, or use items. Each character has unique combat roles, such as Cloud’s close-range melee and Barret’s long-distance attacks. Players can freely switch between party members in battle, combine magic and summons, and unleash powerful Limit Break attacks. Weapon selection, magic preparation, and tactical use of abilities are essential for success, maintaining strategy alongside fast-paced action.

The game emphasizes exploration, with fully 3D polygonal environments replacing the original pre-rendered backgrounds. While largely linear, Midgar is richly detailed, and side quests expand character backstories and interactions. Players experience expanded narratives for familiar characters, including additional plotlines and new story elements, which deepen relationships and reveal more about the world’s political and social conflicts.

The plot begins with Cloud joining AVALANCHE to sabotage Mako Reactor 1, sparking a series of events that draw him into conflict with Shinra. He is haunted by memories of Sephiroth and guided by mysterious ghost-like entities known as Whispers, which intervene to preserve destiny. Following the partial destruction of the Sector 7 slums, Cloud, Tifa, and Barret rescue Aerith from Shinra experimentation and learn of her heritage and Shinra’s plans for the Promised Land. Red XIII, a sentient feline-like creature, explains the Whispers’ role in maintaining the course of fate. Sephiroth’s actions culminate in the murder of Shinra’s president and the theft of the alien entity Jenova, setting the stage for further confrontations.

The game’s climax in Midgar features battles with the Whisper Harbinger and Sephiroth, testing Cloud’s resolve and loyalty. Sephiroth separates Cloud from his allies, offering him a chance to defy fate; Cloud refuses and is defeated but spared. The story concludes with the group leaving Midgar to pursue Sephiroth, while SOLDIER member Zack Fair, revealed to be alive, defeats Shinra forces and joins Cloud’s journey.

Final Fantasy VII Remake received critical acclaim for its visuals, narrative depth, music, and updated combat system. Critics praised the expanded storylines and character development, though some noted the game’s linearity and repetitive side quests. The game was a commercial success, selling over 3.5 million copies within three days of release and exceeding 7 million by September 2023. Its sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, was released in 2024, with the third installment currently in development.
