Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world first-person action RPG developed by CD Projekt RED and published by CD Projekt, inspired by the tabletop role-playing game Cyberpunk 2020 created by Mike Pondsmith. Set in a futuristic dystopian world, the game immerses players in the neon-lit streets of Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour, and cybernetic modification.

The game underwent a notably long and challenging development period, first revealed in May 2012. Originally slated for release on April 16, 2020, for Windows PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Google Stadia, its launch was delayed several times before finally releasing on December 10, 2020. The next-gen versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles arrived as a free upgrade on February 15, 2022, while a Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025.

The game begins with players choosing one of three distinct life paths for the protagonist, V: Nomad, Street Kid, or Corpo. Each origin story shapes V’s background and motivations but ultimately leads to meeting Jackie Welles, a small-time hustler from the streets of Night City. Together, they form a mercenary duo, often working alongside the skilled netrunner T-Bug.

In 2077, a local fixer named Dexter “Dex” DeShawn hires V and Jackie for a high-risk heist: stealing a revolutionary biochip known as the Relic from the powerful Arasaka Corporation. The mission takes place at the luxurious Konpeki Plaza hotel, but things spiral out of control when V and Jackie witness Yorinobu Arasaka murdering his father, Saburo Arasaka, the head of the megacorporation. Yorinobu covers up the assassination as a poisoning and triggers a massive security lockdown. During the chaos, Arasaka’s netrunners kill T-Bug, forcing V and Jackie to flee.

As their escape turns desperate, the Relic’s protective container is damaged, and Jackie is forced to insert the chip into his own neural port to preserve it. Despite escaping aboard the automated Delamain taxi, Jackie succumbs to his injuries, using his final moments to transfer the biochip into V’s neural system, unknowingly setting in motion the chain of events that will define the rest of the story.

Cyberpunk 2077 immerses players in a futuristic, cyberpunk, and dystopian universe. The story unfolds in the year 2077, on an Earth reshaped by technological advancements and deep social inequality, within the fictional megalopolis of Night City, located in the Free State of California. In this world, chaos coexists with cutting-edge technology: poverty and disparity are rampant, while powerful megacorporations dominate society, having supplanted traditional governments.

At the same time, cyberspace emerges as the new “frontier” of this era, further amplifying the reach of technology into every aspect of human life. Technological enhancements have become commonplace — particularly cybernetic implants, which offer various physical and mental augmentations to the human body. Alongside this, the widespread use of synthetic drugs—diverse, accessible, and often addictive—reflects the unrestrained and chaotic nature of this society.

Between the 1990s and 2070, the world of Cyberpunk takes a decisive turn away from our own reality. Several major events mark this transformation: the collapse of the United States in 1996, the relentless wars between rival corporations, and the “Net Crash” of 2022. These upheavals shift the global balance of power, allowing megacorporations to expand their influence and impose control over both institutions and everyday life.
