Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. Released on October 25, 2019, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, it is the sixteenth main installment in the Call of Duty franchise and serves as a reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series. Officially revealed on May 30, 2019, the game marks a return to a realistic and contemporary setting.

The campaign follows a gripping narrative centered around CIA operatives and British SAS soldiers who join forces with Urzikstani rebels to fight against Russian military forces invading their fictional homeland. The game’s Special Ops mode expands upon the campaign storyline with cooperative missions, allowing players to experience interconnected operations.

In multiplayer, Modern Warfare redefines the formula by introducing cross-platform play for the first time in the series, enabling players across different systems to compete together. The gameplay emphasizes tactical realism, featuring new mechanics such as a Realism mode that removes the HUD for a more immersive experience, and a revamped Ground War mode that supports up to 64 players in large-scale battles.

The Modern Warfare campaign emphasizes realism and introduces morally driven tactical choices. Players are evaluated and given a score at the end of each mission, based on their decisions during combat. One of the core mechanics involves identifying threats in real time—for instance, determining whether a civilian woman reaching for an object is grabbing a firearm or simply picking up her baby.

This collateral damage system, known as the threat assessment, grades players from A to F, depending on how many civilians are injured or killed. Higher ratings earn unique rewards, while lower scores may impact mission feedback.

The character dialogue and interactions also change depending on player choices, enhancing the sense of agency and consequence. In addition, players can make tactical decisions during missions—such as using a sniper rifle to approach objectives in a non-linear fashion, or deciding between flashlights and night vision goggles when breaching and clearing enemy compounds.

During a covert mission to recover stolen chemical gas bound for Urzikstan, CIA operative Alex (Chad Michael Collins) and his MARSOC Marine team are ambushed by unknown enemies who kill the Marines and escape with the gas. Station Chief Kate Laswell (Rya Kihlstedt) enlists Captain John Price (Barry Sloane) to retrieve the chemicals and prevent a crisis with Russia. Twenty-four hours later, Al-Qatala terrorists launch a suicide attack at Piccadilly Circus in London. SAS Sergeant Kyle Garrick (Elliot Knight) works with Price and local police to contain the assault.

Alex is then sent to Urzikstan, where he meets rebel leader Farah Karim (Claudia Doumit). She agrees to help the CIA locate the stolen gas in exchange for support against General Roman Barkov’s Russian forces. After capturing Al-Qatala’s leader, “The Wolf”, his lieutenant “The Butcher” attacks the U.S. embassy to free him. Though Price and Farah defend the site, the terrorists succeed. Farah plans an ambush on the “Highway of Death,” but Barkov’s troops intervene. Her brother Hadir (Aidan Bristow) is revealed to have stolen the gas and uses it against both Barkov’s men and Al-Qatala, killing them all.

Flashbacks reveal that Farah and Hadir lost their parents during Barkov’s invasion in 1999 and were later imprisoned by him. Years later, Farah escaped with Price’s help, becoming the rebel commander she is now. In the present, Hadir joins Al-Qatala, forcing Price and Farah to hunt him down. After Hadir’s arrest, Russia demands his extradition.

The team reunites to destroy Barkov’s gas factory. Alex sacrifices himself to detonate the explosives, while Farah kills Barkov as he flees. With Barkov dead, Price and Laswell form Task Force 141, recruiting Gaz, Soap, and Ghost to counter new threats like Victor Zakhaev and Khaled Al-Asad, who now leads Al-Qatala’s assault on Verdansk.
