Office for the Web was a free online version of Microsoft Office that included web-based versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Password-protected documents could not be opened, and files containing macros could be viewed but not executed in the browser.

In July 2013, Word added support for rendering PDF documents and converting them to editable Word files, although some formatting differences could occur. By November 2013, the suite introduced real-time co-authoring and automatic saving of files.

Compared to the full desktop Office suite, Office for the Web lacked several advanced features and did not include programs such as Access and Publisher. However, users could open files directly in the desktop version via the “Open in desktop app” command to access the complete functionality.

The Personal edition of Office for the Web was freely available to anyone with a Microsoft account through Office.com, which replaced SkyDrive (now OneDrive) and Office Live Workspace. Enterprise users could access managed versions through Office 365. Starting in February 2013, users were able to view and edit SkyDrive files without signing in. The service could also be deployed privately in organizations via SharePoint or Office Web Apps Server.

Microsoft also provided other web-based Office applications, including Outlook Web App (formerly Outlook Web Access), Lync Web App (formerly Office Communicator Web Access), and Project Web App (formerly Project Web Access).
